The material used to manufacture the sets is hot-rolled steel. Because of the way the raw metal is processed, scale and surface irregularities are inherently present in every piece. Although sometimes distracting in appearance, they do not interfere with the strength or function of the parts. Many outdoor enthusiasts like the look of the metal because it closely resembles the wrought iron used by most blacksmith shops.
The paint used on the sets is an oil-based, rust-preventative product specially formulated to withstand heat of up to 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. It may smoke a little the first time it is exposed to an open fire, but the fumes are nontoxic. It is not uncommon for the paint to occasionally chip or scratch, during shipping or with routine use. Repairs can be made with any high temperature grill paint, such as Rust-o-leum, available at most hardware stores.
